1.Jhumpa Lahiri,an Indian-American Pulitzer Prize winner has been selected for the prestigious National Humanities Medal 2014.This award would be presented to her by US President Barack Obama.She has been selected for the award for enlarging the human story.

2.Prime Minister Narendra Modi released two commemorative coins of Rs.125 and Rs.10 in the memory of former President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan(Teachers Day celebrates the birthday of India's second President and Scholar Dr.Radha Krishnan).

3.WhatsApp,the messaging service Facebook bought for $19 billion in 2014 hit another mile stone.WhatsApp founder Jan Koum said that the service now has 900 million (90 Crore) monthly active users worldwide.

4.The KCP Sugar and Industries Corporation Limited (KSICL) has bagged Gold Medal from Sugar Technologists' Association of India (STAI).This award has been given for it's research in innovation in energy efficiency and conservation in Sugar Industry.KSICL is one of the 706 sugar mills to be selected for the coveted award.

5.Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan took part in the Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament on August 31.She had a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and she emphasized the need for urgent UN Security Council  Reform.She also said that it is the time to Include India as a Permanent Member.

6.Bollywood Stars Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan and Oscar-Winning Composer A R Rehman have joined an ambitious global campaign which aims to spread awareness about the Sustainable Development Goals.This Development Goals will be adopted later this month at a high-level UN Summit.

7.President Pranab Mukherjee himself turned teacher and taught school students of class XI and class XII of Dr Rajendra Prasad Sarvodhya Vidhyalaya about the country's political history.This school is located in the Presidential Estate. This was the first time that an Indian President has interacted with students on the eve of Teacher's day.

8.In a tribute to former President of India APJ Abdul Kalam,the Odisha Government announced to rename the Wheeler Island as Abdul Kalam Island.The Wheeler Island is located approximately 10 kilometres off the Odisha coast on the Bay of Bengal.

9.Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar announced the implementation of OROP (One Rank One Pension) for ex-service men.The Defence Minister said 2013 would be taken as the base year for calculation and it would be implemented from July 1,2014 the earliest date after the government assumed office.

10.Indian Shooter Apurvi Chandela (Jaipur) won silver medal in women's 10m air rifle event of the ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup Finals.Ahmadi Elaheh of Iran won Gold medal.

11.Indian Boxer Vikas Krishan (75kg) won Silver Medal after losing to Uzbekistan's Bektemir Melikuziev in the final at the Asian Boxing Championship in Bangkok.
